Woman shot to death in grocery store parking lot

BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating a deadly shooting outside the Ingles grocery store in Auburn, Georgia.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said the shooting happened around 5:20 p.m. in the store parking lot.

The sheriff's office is assisting the Auburn Police Department in the investigation. The GBI has also been called in to investigate.

A 911 call from the grocery store came in as a domestic disturbance, according to the GBI.

“Witnesses did hear multiple shots,” said Jessie Maddox, GBI special agent in charge.

Officers arrived and found a woman shot to death in a car. The woman was identified as Dorothy Russell, 51, of Statham, Georgia.

Police said Darrin Russell, 50, shot and killed his wife.

The GBI said Russell left in a Mercedes, but was caught about 45 minutes later.

“If this can happen in Small Town, USA, going to the local grocery store, it can happen anywhere,” Chasney Hauffman said.

Darrin Russell has been charged with one count of murder and is being held in the Barrow County jail.
