At least 2 injured after fight sparks gunfire near busy downtown MARTA station

ATLANTA — Police are investigating a shooting that left at least two people injured near the Five Points MARTA station and Underground Atlanta on Saturday evening.

Police said a man and a woman were shot near Alabama and Broad streets.

Police said two men got into a fight and one pulled out a gun and started shooting. The other man returned fire. The woman was shot in the crossfire.

The first suspect stayed at the scene, police said. The second suspect left in a getaway car, but police think he was shot in the hip.

Channel 2's Michael Seiden was at the scene, where police put down multiple crime scene markers.

Witnesses told Seiden they heard around 15 gunshots.

Viewers sent Channel 2 Action News photos of several police cars in the area and streets blocked off by police tape.

It's unclear what condition the victims are in. They were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Seiden learned that both victims were conscious and alert when they were taken to the hospital.

Seiden talked to witnesses who heard the gunshots. Brian Miller said he was stepping off the train at the Five Points MARTA station when he heard shots ring out.

"I just heard, 'Pow! Pow! Pow!' About 15 rounds," Miller said. "Everybody hit the ground."

When Miller looked up, he said he saw a woman across the street desperate for help.

"She was laying on the ground, bleeding out, and here comes all these cops," Miller said.

Investigator James White said the shooting stemmed from a fight.

"There were several parties involved in the dispute. At some point during the dispute, one of the parties shot at the other," White said. "A female victim was struck in the crossfire and another male was also struck."

Police found dozens of shell casings on the ground and a trail of blood near one of the victim's shoes.

Police are still searching for the second suspect.

Seiden learned that police are checking to see if surveillance cameras at nearby stores captured the shooting.
