10 cows killed, dozens take off after cattle truck crashes on interstate

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — It was a wild morning on the morning commute for some drivers in Cobb County. Channel 2 Action News This Morning had live coverage of a crash that spilled cattle on the interstate.

The cattle truck crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday on the Interstate 285 eastbound ramp to I-75 north around 3:30 a.m.

The area was near exit 20 toward New Northside Drive. Ten cows were killed.

At least one driver was injured in the crash. Other crashes were reported in the mess.

A total of 89 cows were on the truck when it crashed. Police said around 12:30 p.m. Monday that they have accounted for 87 cows, including those that were killed in the area of Sandy Springs and Cobb County. Some people reported seeing some of the cows by the Chattahoochee River after the crash on Monday.

Sandy Springs police captured the last rogue cow a little after 4 p.m. Monday or so they thought.

Shortly after Sandy Springs police sent out a tweet saying they caught up with the cow, it was no longer seen by DOT cameras. We followed this saga on Facebook Live during our evening newscasts.

With the assistance of two mounted cowboys, Sandy Springs police were able to rope the young bull around 8:00 p.m.

Crews used a portable barricade to help corral the other cows earlier in the day.

Traffic was backed up for miles in the area for hours.

Channel 2 Action News spoke to drivers who were caught in the traffic.

“Trying to get on the road at 3:30 this morning thinking I’ll beat the Atlanta traffic,” said driver Marques Robinson.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach was the first reporter on the scene when crews began corralling the cows and cleaning up the crash.

Gehlbach later moved to a SunTrust bank where crews worked to catch two cows that ran free from the crash scene.

And this isn't the first time Arum has covered cows on the interstate. In May, a truck carrying cows crashed on I-75 near Wade Green Road. In that crash, 10 cows were killed and eight roamed the interstate as crews cleaned up the crash.

In June, Mark Arum covered another crash when a cattle truck overturned on I-285 in DeKalb County. In that crash 37 cows were onboard the truck. Unfortunately, three cows were killed.
