Reports: Dansby Swanson finalizing deal with Chicago Cubs

ATLANTA — Dansby Swanson will not be in an Atlanta Braves uniform next year.

A MLB source confirmed to Channel 2 sports director Zach Klein that Swanson is finalizing a 7-year, $177 million with the Chicago Cubs.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel first reported the deal and that it includes a full no-trade clause.

This marks the second free agency in a row where Atlanta did not bring back a fan favorite and clubhouse leader after Freddie Freeman’s departure to Los Angeles last year.

Swanson, a Marietta native and former No. 1 draft pick from Vanderbilt, joined the Braves after a 2015 trade with the Diamondbacks. He led his hometown team to 2021 World Series title, the Braves’ first championship in 26 years.

Swanson was expected to receive a significant deal based on the free agency market for shortstops this year.

Carlos Correa and the Giants agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract. Trea Turner and the Phillies agreed to a 11-year, $300 million deal. Xander Bogaerts and the Padres agreed to 11-year, $280 million deal.

The Braves and Cubs play each other in August and September.

A deal with Chicago will also put Swanson in the same city as his wife and soccer star Mallory Pugh.

Pugh has one year left on her contract with the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL.
