Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms ordered the first curfew on Saturday after peaceful protests turned into a night of vandalism and looting from downtown Atlanta to Buckhead.

During a news conference Tuesday, Gov. Brian Kemp addressed the unrest from the weekend. Here are some bullet points from that news conference:

  • Kemp praised law enforcement for helping to keep the peace and businesses safe. Calls out those people who came Atlanta to cause problems.
  • Kemp says this is a moment to unite Georgians and move the state forward.
  • Kemp says there will be increased police presence in Brunswick on Thursday as Gregory and Travis McMichael, the father and son charged in the Ahmaud Arbery killing, are expected to have a court hearing.

Thousands of people in Atlanta and across Georgia protested the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody. Most of the demonstrations were peaceful, but there were some skirmishes between police and protesters.

Protesters marched through the streets of Atlanta throughout the day again Monday, with at least 55 people being arrested for trying to walk onto the downtown connector.

As the night moved on, protesters moved back toward Centennial Olympic Park. Shortly after 8 p.m., police began clearing the streets. As the 9 p.m. curfew went into effect, the presence of protesters was very little.
